14 05 2008The first thing you should keep in mind before starting to write your compare-contrast essay is the main purpose of writing compare-contrast essays. Do you know what is it? The main purpose of writing a compare-contrast essay is to compare 2 objects by the number of similarities and differences.
If you still have not determined the topic of your compare-contrast essay, I suggest you comparing 2 political structures: totalitarianism and democracy.
At the first look these structures seem to be incomparable as they are absolutely different. Still, if you look deeper inside them, you will find out that there are certain similarities.
The first thing you should start your compare-contrast essay with is a thesis statement. Any thesis statement is the most important component of Introduction. It can be expressed in one sentence or in several ones.
Next you should do is to give the definitions for both political structures. It will be the Main Body of your compare-contrast essay. Here you may also present the most peculiar features of both structures. Let us consider them:
Totalitarianism – the power is in hands of one certain party, moral pressure and physical on people expressing protest, prohibition of all existing parties except the leading one, etc.;
Democracy – the freedom of speech and actions. Parties get all rights for existence.
Actually, the main features of both systems are the differences themselves. What are their similarities? In fact, democracy is rather a relative notion. Inspite of the fact that you have freedom of speech and actions, you cannot do everything you want. So, the rights are restricted by the state regulations. If you break any rules, you will have to bear moral or physical pressure as well. Thus, it is the main similarity of totalitarianism and democracy.
In the end of your compare-contrast essay draw a conclusion.
